What happens when the written record becomes mistaken for the beginning of a word? Using "JuJu" as the centre of a wider conversation, this opinion piece explores the limits of dictionaries, colonial archives and recorded etymology when examining cultures built through oral tradition, seafaring trade and centuries of human exchange.
